  6. This document contains information on the following:

  8. 1. Improving system performance.

  18. 1. Improving system performance.
  19.  
  20. Microsoft Works for Windows, Multimedia Edition uses a lot of your
  21. system's memory and speed to display the animated movies and the 
  22. Online Reference. The minimum memory requirement is 4 Megabytes (MB). 
  23.  
  24. You can improve your system's performance by:
  25.  
  26. A) Adding more extended memory to your system.
  27.  
  28. B) Running Works without the SmartDrive device driver that 
  29. Microsoft Windows may have installed on your system. (To disable 
  30. SmartDrive remove the DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS line from your CONFIG.SYS. 
  31. For more information see your Windows documentation.)
  32.  
  33. C) Setting up a permanent SwapFile on your hard drive 
  34. (if you are using a computer with a 386 processor). 
  35.  
  36. NOTE: Normally Windows creates its own temporary SwapFile, but 
  37. if your hard disk is full or fragmented, this temporary file 
  38. occasionally becomes unavailable. Make the permanent SwapFile at 
  39. least 2048 Kilobytes (K). For more information see your Windows 
  40. documentation.

  42. D) Using a 16-color driver for your display, even if you have a 
  43. 256-color card, when running on a 20 MHz or slower system with 
  44. only 4 MB of RAM. (To change the display driver, run the 
  45. Microsoft Windows Setup program from MS-DOS or Windows and 
  46. select the standard VGA driver.) 
  47.  
  48. E) For best performance of the multimedia elements, it is recommended
  49.  that you set your color card driver to display no more than 256 colors.
  50.  
  51. F) Defragment, or "clean up," your hard disk by running a disk 
  52. defragmentation program. Third-party utility and disk optimization
  53. programs often provide a defragmenting program.

  56. 2. Using Microsoft Works, Multimedia Edition with Microsoft Encarta.
  57.  
  58. When you install Encarta, it is essential that you choose the Faster 
  59. option. (This option appears when you run Encarta Setup) . If Encarta 
  60. was installed on your system when you bought it, then your hardware 
  61. manufacturer should have already used the Fast install option.

  64. 3. Using templates from a previous version of Microsoft Works.
  65.  
  66. Microsoft Works for Windows version 2.0 and Microsoft Works for MS-DOS 
  67. version 2.0 or 3.0 templates can be opened in Microsoft Works for Windows 
  68. version 3.0. The template files for these previous versions of Works have 
  69. special names. By specifying the special name in the File Open dialog box,
  70. you can open templates from one of these previous versions of Works in 
  71. Works for Windows 3.0. The filenames for previous versions of Works are 
  72. as follows:

  83. Look for these files in the Works program directory. (The subdirectory 
  84. where you installed the previous version of Works.) If you do not know 
  85. which directory this is, try looking in the \MSWORKS subdirectory if 
  86. your previous version was Works for Windows 2.0, or try \WORKS if your 
  87. previous version was Works for MS-DOS version 2.0 or 3.0.
  88.  
  89. One at a time, open these files in Works for Windows 3.0. Then choose 
  90. the Save As command from the File menu to create a Works for 
  91. Windows 3.0 template. For information on saving a template in Works 
  92. for Windows 3.0, see the Online Reference. After you have created Works 
  93. for Windows 3.0 templates from the previous version's files, you may want
  94. to delete the old files. You will not be losing data, because Works for 
  95. Windows 3.0 makes a new copy of the file when it creates each template.

  99. 4. Troubleshooting sound problems.
  100.  
  101. If you don't hear any sound when you play animated movies from the
  102. Works Online Reference or tutorial, you'll want to make sure that
  103. you have a sound card installed, a speaker hooked up, and the
  104. volume set at a comfortable level. You can perform a sound check
  105. by selecting the Sound option from the Windows Control Panel.
  106.  
  107. If you're not getting any sound from your system, make sure that
  108. your speaker or headphones are plugged into the sound jack on 
  109. your sound card, and not into the sound jack you may have on the
  110. front of your CD-ROM drive.
  111.  
  112. If you're running Works on a 386 computer with only 4 MB of memory 
  113. and are encountering out of memory errors, or if the audio is broken 
  114. up and animations are slow, you should check to see if you're running
  115. in Standard mode Windows. Choose About Program Manager from
  116. the Program Manager Help menu to see which mode you're running
  117. in.
  118.  
  119. If you're in Standard mode, make sure that you're starting 
  120. Windows by typing WIN at the MS-DOS prompt. If Windows defaults to
  121. Standard rather than Enhanced mode on a 386 computer, this is probably
  122. because you don't have enough memory free. Try removing SmartDrive
  123. from your CONFIG.SYS file, if it's installed, or cutting down the
  124. size of any RAM drive you may have set up. (See your Windows 
  125. documentation.)
  126.  
  127. When running in Enhanced mode on a 4-MB 386 computer, you may still
  128. encounter memory problems or sound breaks. Make sure that when
  129. you start Windows you have a permanent SwapFile of at least 
  130. 2048 K. (See your Windows documentation.) 
  131.  
  132. Sound breaks on any computer that is using a 256-color card are 
  133. usually the result of a low memory situation and can usually be 
  134. fixed by switching back to a 16-color video driver; this means 
  135. Works will need to devote less memory to display the graphics 
  136. and can use the freed-up memory to keep the sound and animation 
  137. flowing smoothly.
  138.  
  139. If you wish to leave the Works tutorial temporarily to run another
  140. application that plays sound, quit the tutorial first. Otherwise
  141. the other application may not be able to play any sound.

  144. 5. "Invalid SHARE parameters" message when opening or saving files.
  145.  
  146. After installing Microsoft Works 3.0, it is sometimes necessary to turn
  147. off your computer and then turn it on again, so that special
  148. configuration changes can take effect. If you did not do this after
  149. installing Works, and you are getting the error message "Too many files
  150. open, or invalid SHARE parameters," then try turning off your computer
  151. and restarting it.

  154. 6. Transferring files to the Macintosh.
  155.  
  156. Microsoft Works for Windows can save files in Microsoft Works for 
  157. Macintosh version 3.0 format. When doing this, you must have software 
  158. installed on your Macintosh that understands a MS-DOS or Windows 
  159. floppy disk. Macintosh PC Exchange sold by Apple Computer, Inc. is 
  160. one of the software products that can be used for this purpose.
  161.  
  162. If you are using Macintosh PC Exchange, files saved in Works for 
  163. Macintosh format by Works for Windows must have document types 
  164. assigned to them. Otherwise Works for Macintosh will not 
  165. recognize the file. For instructions on how to assign 
  166. document types, see the Macintosh PC Exchange User's Guide. Below 
  167. are the document types you need to assign so that Works for Macintosh 
  168. can read files saved by Works for Windows.

  170. Document Types:
  171.  
  172. Works for Windows uses a filename extension, or suffix, for files 
  173. that are saved in Works for Macintosh format. Depending on the kind 
  174. of document, when you save a Works for Windows file in Works for 
  175. Macintosh format, the filename extension will be:
  176.  
  177. .WPS for a Word Processor document
  178. .WKS for a Spreadsheet
  179. .WDB for a Database
  180.  
  181. Follow the directions in the Macintosh PC Exchange User's Guide to 
  182. assign the MS-DOS filename extension, or MS-DOS suffix, as follows: 
  183.

  192. 7. Using Microsoft Works, Multimedia Edition with ATI video cards
  193.  
  194. If you are using an ATI video card and one of the "mach" video drivers 
  195. (mach8 or mach32) as your Windows display driver*, the Device Bitmaps 
  196. setting for the video card must be set to Off. This enables the 
  197. animations in Works to run properly. To check or change this setting, 
  198. do the following:
  199.  
  200. 1. Launch the Mach FlexDesk Control Panel by double-clicking on the 
  201. Mach FlexDesk Control Panel icon usually found in the Mach Utilities 
  202. program group in Program Manager. The Mach Utilities group is created 
  203. when you run the ATI Mach Video Driver Setup Program.
  204. 2. Click the Advanced button.
  205. 3. If it is not already, set Device Bitmaps to Off.
  206. 4. Click OK to close the FlexDesk Advanced Settings.
  207. 5. Click OK to close the FlexDesk Control Panel.
  208.  
  209. You will need to restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
  210.  
  211. *You can verify the Windows Display driver selection by double-clicking 
  212. the Windows Setup icon found in the Main program group of the Windows 
  213. Program Manager.
  214.

  219. 8. Installing Microsoft Works from a network CD-ROM drive
  220.  
  221. This topic explains how to install Microsoft Works on individual 
  222. computers from a network server. It also explains how, while using 
  223. Works on an individual computer, you can access the Works Online 
  224. Reference and tutorials from a network server.
  225.  
  226. Before installing Works on individual computers on the network, the 
  227. network administrator must install a CD-ROM drive on the network 
  228. file server as a shared drive.
  229.  
  230. Then, after Works is installed on an individual computer, you can 
  231. use Works, even if your computer is not connected to the network. 
  232. However, when you install Works from a network CD-ROM drive, the 
  233. Online Reference and tutorials are not installed. They reside on 
  234. the Works CD. To access the Online Reference or tutorials, a 
  235. computer must be connected to the network CD-ROM drive.
  236.  
  237. NOTE: Every Works user must have a Microsoft Works for Windows license. 
  238. A license is obtained by buying a retail package or a Microsoft 
  239. License Pak. For more information about network use restrictions, 
  240. see your Microsoft Works for Windows license agreement.

  242. To install Works from a network CD-ROM drive
  243.  
  244. 1. Be sure that the Works compact disk is in the network CD-ROM drive 
  245. and that the drive is available (shared) to the computers on the network. 
  246. 2. From the computer on which you want to install Works, connect to 
  247. the network CD-ROM drive.
  248. 3. If necessary, start Windows.
  249. 4. If necessary, switch to Program Manager.
  250. 5. From the File menu, choose Run. 
  251. 6. In the Command Line box, type the drive letter of the network 
  252. CD-ROM drive, followed by \setup 
  253.  
  254. For example, type n:\setup if N is the network CD-ROM drive.
  255. The Works Setup program starts.
  256. 7. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup.
  257. 8. Repeat steps 2 through 7 for each computer on which Works 
  258. is being installed.

  260. To use the Online Reference and tutorial while using Works on a network
  261. 1. Be sure that the Works compact disk is in the network CD-ROM drive 
  262. and that the drive is available (shared) to the computers on the network.
  263. 2. From the computer on which you want to install Works, connect to 
  264. the network CD drive, using the same drive letter that was used to 
  265. install Works.
  266.  
  267. For example, use n:\ if N was the network CD-ROM drive that was used 
  268. to install Works.
  269.  
  270. NOTE: If you use a different drive letter, you must change the drive 
  271. letter in three files that Works modified during installation, 
  272. as described in the following table.

  280. 3. If you changed the drive letter as described in the Note 
  281. following step 2, restart Windows.
  282. 4. If necessary, start Works.
  283. 5. To display the Online Reference, choose Contents from the Help menu.
